Literacy Jam provides music + literacy incursions to early learning centres and organisations across the Sunshine Coast and Greater Brisbane areas.
We provide professional development sessions that give early childhood professionals the practical skills and confidence to be able to play the ukulele.
We also lead community music + literacy workshops for children and families.
Literacy Jam is starting an early childhood music and literacy revolution – one child, one centre and one educator at a time!
About Us
Natalie is the Founder and Sunshine Coast Leader of Literacy Jam. She is a qualified former primary school teacher, musician and early childhood educator. As a mum of two little boys, Natalie is deeply passionate about creating joyful foundations for lifelong learning in young children during their most formative years.
Natalie began her teaching career in the Northern Territory teaching in remote schools. There she witnessed the power of music, story and creative approaches to literacy instruction in improving outcomes, engagement and wellbeing for her students.
Natalie has been a working musician playing bass guitar and singing in covers bands alongside writing and performing her own original songs. She has had her poetry and a short story published in print and digital journals and collections. Natalie has also worked as an editor for a major educational publishing company and has edited resources used in classrooms across Australia.
Natalie’s qualifications include a Bachelor of Education; a Graduate Diploma in Writing, Editing and Publishing; and a Diploma of Music. She has also studied the Kodaly Method (music pedagogy) and is currently earning a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care.
Literacy Jam is the culmination of a lifetime of experience across the education, publishing and music industries. For a long time it has been Natalie’s dream to bring her passions and skills together for the purpose of supporting young children to learn and grow. Through Literacy Jam, she feels very lucky to be able to do this.
Founded in mid-2026, Literacy Jam offers music + literacy incursions to early learning centres, professional development and community workshops. Literacy Jam’s mission is to start an early childhood music and literacy revolution – one child, one centre and one educator at a time!
Services
Music + literacy incursions
Literacy Jam is excited to launch Sing, Read & Grow, our boutique music and literacy incursion program for Early Learning Centres across the Sunshine Coast and Greater Brisbane areas.
Our fun and engaging incursions combine singing, musical play, percussion and rhythm activities, movement, interactive storytime and early literacy activities to support children’s cognitive, physical, social and emotional development in their earliest years. Incursions are led by Natalie and her acoustic guitar, along with her team of puppet and plushie friends!
As part of a Sing, Read & Grow incursion, Natalie visits each room in the Centre to lead a session specifically designed for each age group. The sessions are usually 15, 20 or 30 minutes in duration and are well-paced to ensure children are learning and engaged.
All of the music is sung and played on acoustic guitar – no iPads or backing tracks!
Each session is a joyful combination of:
guitar sing-alongs to favourite nursery rhymes and popular children’s songs
interactive storytime
movement and free dance
percussion and rhythm activities
early literacy activities
musial play.
Expect puppets, plushies, games and more!
Children aged 3 and up have the opportunity to explore and play tuned instruments including xylophones and ukuleles. Kindergarten children participate in ukulele club throughout the year!
Our Sing, Read & Grow incursions run during the Queensland school terms and can be booked per term. Incursions are offered as weekly or fortnightly term programs so children have time to build familiarity, confidence and participation across regular sessions. Morning and afternoon time slots are available.
Bookings are now open for Term One 2027.
Professional development
Our One Uke, Ten Songs professional development gives early childhood professionals the practical skills and confidence to be able to play well-known nursery rhymes using a ukulele. It aims to demystify the ukulele, break down the necessary skills into easy-to-understand chunks, build your confidence and empower you to come to work the next day and play songs that children love using only your voice and the ukulele.
This professional development supports educators to confidently incorporate music, singing, rhythm and creative expression into everyday early childhood experiences. Educators can use their new skills during group experiences, transitions, routines, movement activities, spontaneous play and everyday moments of connection. Music becomes not just an activity, but another way for educators and children to communicate, connect, explore and learn together.
Bookings are now open for 2027.
